Ambient, Task and Accent Lighting: What’s the Difference?

There are many different ways to light your home.

When designing a lighting plan for an interior or exterior of a home or large scale remodel, understanding the details of the three main types of lighting: ambient, task and accent is essential. Each serves a specific function and contributes greatly to the comfort, functionality, style and mood of every room. What is the difference?

Here is a lighting breakdown of the three most common: Accent, Task and Ambient.

Ambient Lighting
Often referred to as general lighting, ambient lighting usually provides the primary, overall illumination in a space. It sets the tone and allows for comfortable, safe movement within a room.

Living Room: Ceiling-mounted fixtures or recessed lights provide even lighting throughout the space.

Bedroom: A central pendant or flush-mount ceiling light offers soft, comfortable illumination.

Kitchen: Overhead lighting, such as recessed cans or pendants over an island or peninsula countertop can add style and light up the entire room.

Task Lighting
Usually brighter than ambient lighting, task lighting is more focused and provides extra light where detailed activities take place. Examples of tasks that often require focused lighting are reading, working, preparing and cooking.

Kitchen: Under-cabinet lights illuminate countertops for food prep, above for recessed, rope and LED lighting.

Bathroom: Under mirror lighting, vanity lights around a mirror help with grooming and makeup.

Home Office: Desk lamps provide targeted light for reading or computer work.

Accent Lighting
Accent lighting is used to highlight specific features, draws attention to the details or focal points within a room.

Living Room: Wall sconces, picture lights to emphasize artwork or architectural elements.

Dining Room: A spotlight over a counter top bar draws attention to decorative items. An eye-catching artistic chandelier can make a statement.

Hallways: Recessed up-lighting along the floor or wall mounts can highlight textures and showcase treasured antiques.

A well-balanced lighting plan incorporates all three types to create a space that is unique, functional and visually appealing. Start with ambient light as the foundation, task lighting for function and accent lighting for atmosphere and mood. Each room can be tailored to suit both social and personal style, while comfortable and functional to meet your needs.
