Rough-In to Final Trim: Electrical Milestones Contractors Need on Project Timelines

Managing a remodel or new build is about sequencing, ensuring each trade is in and out at the right time for projects to stay on schedule. Electrical work is no exception. Understanding the key electrical milestones during a project helps general contractors align timelines, avoid conflicts and keep inspections moving smoothly.

Here are five key electrical project milestones for every general contractor to consider.

1. Rough-In: The Foundation of the Electrical System
The rough-in stage occurs after framing and before drywall. Electricians will install wiring, outlets, switch boxes and panel connections. This stage is the foundation of the electrical system and should take place before insulation or wall finishes begin work.

GC Tip: Schedule electrical rough-in inspections immediately after completion to avoid potential drywall tear-outs if any adjustments are needed.

2. Service + Panel Work: Powering the Project
If a panel upgrade or service change is part of the scope, this work often runs concurrent with rough-in. Direct coordination with the utility provider is key, as shutoffs and re-energization require advance scheduling.

GC Tip: Build utility coordination into the project timeline early, as delays here can have a ripple effect into every incoming trade.

3. Mid-Project Milestones: Specialty Installations
This includes installing wiring for HVAC, smart systems, EV charger stations and lighting controls. These systems may involve coordination with multiple subcontractors. For example, electricians often will need to work closely with HVAC installers to ensure circuits are properly sized and easily located.

GC Tip: Communicate the project roadmap with milestone check-ins so all trades are aligned.

4. Final Trim: Fixtures, Devices + Finishing Touches
Once walls are painted and finishes complete, electricians return for the final trim. This stage includes installing outlets, switches, lighting fixtures and connecting smart devices. The end of project stages can fall under tight deadlines as clients prepare to move-in.

GC Tip: Ensure your electrician has access to the site before flooring or cabinets could block access to outlet and lighting locations and cause delays. Also be sure to select owner provided fixtures well ahead of time so they can be on site during this stage which enables the electrician to complete the trim out without numerous trips.

5. Final Inspection: Closing the Loop
Before handoff, the electrical system must pass final inspection. Documentation, compliance and attention to detail here make the difference between a smooth project closeout and costly delays.
